In Damballa’s sanctum, he and Mamadou worked intently at their laboratory tables. They peered into microscopes, mixed substances in flasks and test tubes, and wrote copious notes. Few words were exchanged; it was as though they could read each other’s minds.

And the thoughts on those minds were troubled. …

Finally, Damballa looked up from the slide he was studying. Mamadou did the same.

“It is worse than we thought,” said Damballa.

Mamadou nodded.

“Do you think we can duplicate it?” Damballa asked.

“No. We do not have the ingredients. And I do not want to even think about what we would have to do to obtain them.”

“Neither do I, Mamadou.”

Damballa fell silent then, deep in thought. Mamadou waited. Finally, he gave her the gaze of determination she had seen in him since he was a small boy growing up without a father.

“There is only one alternative, then,” he said.

“I agree,” said Mamadou.

She went back to her test tubes. And Damballa went to another table, upon which a map of New York City and its surroundings was spread. It was a schematic of what lay beneath the streets and roads – a labyrinth far more complicated than the one that led to the sanctum.
